A DEATH

For Mary, who is here
For Lud, who is not

A death
is never
about the deceased
the loved one
moves on
emotions increase
for the living
that grab any raft

Euolgy
has never
been perfect release
the loved one
looks on
in complicit disbelief
still breathing
burdened with after the fact

Comedy
has never
been perfect release
the one left
behind
is struggling to seek
a wave that is gentle
to overturned boats
and lifts
while it drowns
invariably floats

A life
aquiver
may someday cease
and leave behind
what’s called bequeath
but always
enveloped
in aftermath
a comic still searching
the very last laugh
